The game serves as a therapeutic tool, helping young users discover and strengthen their emotional resilience by identifying and harnessing their innate strengths as "superheroes."

Rooted in established cognitive-behavioral frameworks, particularly the Rational Emotive Behavioral Education (REBT) approach pioneered by Albert Ellis in 1956, REThink incorporates tested therapeutic techniques such as rational storytelling and educational cartoons. The game features seven levels set across diverse "territories," each confronting the player with challenges posed by the antagonist, the Irrationalizer, which symbolically represents irrational thoughts. Progression requires players to acquire keys by overcoming these obstacles, with each level escalating in complexity and cognitive demands.

Each stage begins with an introductory trial where Retman, the game’s guiding character, clarifies the mission and objectives. The levels are designed to target specific emotional competencies: starting with emotion recognition and differentiation, advancing to mindfulness and relaxation skills, understanding the interplay between cognition and emotion, reframing irrational beliefs into rational ones, enhancing problem-solving abilities, cultivating happiness and attentional control, and ultimately consolidating these skills to promote overall emotional resilience.

The efficacy of REThink has been substantiated through a rigorous clinical trial (Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03308981). The study demonstrated significant improvements in emotional symptoms, depressive moods, and emotion regulation among participants aged 10 to 16. Notably, aspects such as emotional awareness and control showed meaningful gains. The evidence suggests that reductions in irrational cognitions serve as mechanisms mediating these positive outcomes.

Distinctive in its preventive focus on emotional disorders among youth and grounded in empirical research, REThink offers a scalable approach suitable for widespread use beyond clinical settings. Its alignment with recent recommendations from WHO and UNICEF underscores its potential as a valuable tool in promoting mental health on a broad scale.
